a glimpse on how to look past body negativity and practice self-love and body positivity
Body positivity includes bringing body positivity to people of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately in today’s society, there is a lot of fatphobia and weight bias, which can lead to low self-esteem. Our goal is to show our LA community how to be body positive and inform them about fatphobia and other issues so that we learn how to combat them and live comfortably in our bodies.

our journey
towards
self love
Our journey with our project began with noticing the unrealistic beauty standards in our society. We researched how many people are being affected, and how it affects mental and physical health.
Our second step was finding out why so many people have negative thoughts about themselves. We found issues such as weight bias and fatphobia can trigger our self-esteem. So, we wanted to fix that.
We discovered that daily affirmations helped with increasing self-confidence. That's why we made our Instagram page. Our page has positive affirmations that anyone can access.
Lastly was how to educate others on how to be more body positive. We know that body negativity can begin in the early teen years, so we went to GALS LA middle school to inform young girls on how to fight against body negativity and lean towards body positivity.

member!
Our group member Sophia wrote this speech about her insecurities as a plus-size teenager. She explains how she overcame that and encourages others to do the same.
While doing our project, we learned so much about the body-positive community. There are hundreds of influencers on social media that are promoting self-love and positivity. We learned how to take care of ourselves and how to overcome negative thoughts we might have of ourselves and others. In our own ways, we also became more confident and body positive. For us, this signifies that our project was a success.

Throughout our presentation, we surveyed students of GALS LA. More than half of students say they have witnessed body positivity in their everyday lives. This is the progress we want to see in our communities!
At the end of our presentation, we asked students how they, as an individual, can be more body positive. Learning to be more appreciative of their bodies and saying positive affirmations was most outstanding.
